CFIA Suspends Operations at Establishment 2385, Canadian Smoked Fish (1994 Inc.)

October 24, 2013 (Ottawa) – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has suspended the licence to operate of Establishment 2385, Canadian Smoked Fish (1994) Inc., in Ebenezer, Prince Edward Island, effective October 18, 2013.

Canadian Smoked Fish (1994) Inc. processes hot and cold smoked fish products. The CFIA has determined that adequate controls for food safety described in the facility's Quality Management Program are not being reliably implemented on a consistent basis. The company has also failed to correct deficiencies previously identified through CFIA inspections.

The CFIA has initiated a food safety investigation at the facility. Should any food safety hazards be identified, the Agency will immediately inform the public.

Canadian Smoked Fish (1994) Inc. will not be able to resume operations until they have fully implemented the necessary corrective actions and the CFIA is confident in the plant's capacity to effectively manage food safety risks.

The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets. Licences and registrations of federally registered establishments or companies can be suspended or cancelled for failing to comply with relevant CFIA Acts and Regulations.
