Effective July 16, 2014, the federal registration of Establishment 4233, Red Cove was reinstated and the company is allowed to resume operations under ongoing inspection by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

May 16, 2014, Ottawa: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has not renewed the registration of Establishment 4233, Red Cove, effective May 8, 2014. The establishment is located in Cape Wolfe, Prince Edward Island and processes ready-to-eat, fresh and frozen crab, lobster and molluscan shellfish products.

The CFIA has determined that adequate controls for food safety were not reliably implemented in the facility on a consistent basis, which is in violation of the Fish Inspection Regulations.

Specifically, Establishment 4233 was unable to consistently maintain minimum regulatory standards for construction and equipment, sanitation and process controls. The registration renewal is being refused after repeated registration suspensions by CFIA and ineffective attempts by the establishment to implement corrective measures.

All products currently at the facility that were produced under these inadequate conditions are under CFIA detention and control. There have been no recalls associated with the previous registration suspensions or the CFIA's refusal to renew the company's registration.

The company has been informed of their right to file for an appeal of this decision through the CFIA's Complaints and Appeals Office.

Licences and registrations of federally registered establishments or companies can be suspended, cancelled or refused renewal for failing to comply with relevant CFIA Acts and Regulations. The CFIA publishes a list of suspensions and cancellations on its web site.
