Inspector training

The first graduates of the CFIA's new inspector training program, which is designed to teach inspectors about new approaches to food safety.
A newly-developed, six-week CFIA training program for inspectors has graduated its first class. These seventeen new inspectors represent one of the many important successes that the CFIA is achieving as the Agency implements its change agenda. This training prepares inspectors for the new integrated food program that will result from the Agency's proposed improved food inspection model and from the passage of Safe Food for Canadians Act.
It provides inspectors with up-to-date information about the basics of food inspection and the science behind food production. The training also prepares them to use critical thinking and interpersonal skills they will need as they work to verify that industry is producing safe food.
The proud graduates were awarded their certificates on November 23, 2012. They will now be responsible for verifying food safety and other regulatory requirements in their assigned meat and poultry facilities and slaughterhouses across Canada.
This enhanced training program is one outcome of the commitment to food safety that the Government of Canada made in Budget 2011. The significant investment in inspector training will support a broad range of initiatives that together are allowing the CFIA to better deliver inspections, achieve greater industry compliance with food safety requirements and better protect consumers.
