Safe Food for Canadians: Micro and Small Business Consultation

In 2013 and 2014, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) held extensive consultations with industry and other stakeholders on a new food framework.
Some stakeholders have raised concerns over the ability of micro and small businesses to meet some of the requirements being considered. That is why the CFIA engaged micro and small businesses across the country from April to June 2015.
The consultation helped the CFIA better understand the food safety challenges and costs that micro and small businesses face, and to seek their feedback on options that could reduce the burden associated with certain requirements. The CFIA was also interested in hearing about the types of tools, guidance resources and support that would assist these businesses in producing safe and compliant food.
You are considered a small business if you generate $100,000 or less in annual food gross sales. Micro businesses have annual food gross sales of $30,000 or less.

The CFIA is asking stakeholders to provide comments on the discussion paper until June 30, 2015: Options for Reducing Burden for Micro and Small Businesses.
