The Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) became law in November 2012. Since then, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has consulted widely with industry stakeholders on an approach to consolidate the current food regulations into a single set of regulations. The CFIA continues to work toward fully bringing into force the SFCA and its regulations.
Consulting with Canadians
Consumers and food businesses will have an opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed regulatory approach when the draft Safe Food for Canadians Regulations are published in Canada Gazette, Part I. This formal public consultation is an important part of the process of bringing the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations into force.
New regulations under the SFCA would replace 13 current regulations under the Canada Agricultural Products Act, the Fish Inspection Act, the Meat Inspection Act, and the food-related provisions of the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act.
Preliminary text of the regulations to be made under the SFCA was released in April 2015 during consultations with food businesses. The CFIA is considering the feedback received at that time as the regulatory approach is further developed for publication in Canada Gazette, Part I.
Consultation and Engagement
In general, food businesses have been supportive of the CFIA's proposed regulatory approach. To date, the CFIA has held three rounds of consultations on the regulatory approach for bringing the SFCA into force. We reached thousands of stakeholders in 2013 and 2014, and we conducted additional consultations in 2015 with micro and small businesses.
