Ottawa, June 22, 2011 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume Dole Italian Blend Salad described below because the product may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected product, Dole Italian Blend Salad, product of USA, is sold in a 10 oz. (283 g) plastic bag bearing UPC 0 71430 00819 5 and Best Before date 11-JN-19 (June 19, 2011). The Best Before date is in the upper right-hand corner of the package; the UPC code is on the back of the package, below the barcode.
This product has been distributed in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. However, it may have been distributed in other provinces.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
The manufacturer, Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc., California, USA, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
