Public Safety Alert, Food tampering investigation - Update

Toronto Police Service issues public safety alert for food tampering investigation. The following releases were transmitted by the Toronto Police Service to the news media on June 13, 2011. The CFIA continues to work with the Toronto Police Service on this investigation.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a food tampering investigation.

It is reported that:

  • on Thursday, June 9, 2011, a package of "Andy Boy" Romaine lettuce hearts, two in a package, was purchased from a grocery store, either in the Midland Avenue/Lawrence Avenue West area or Lawrence Avenue East/Birchmount Road area

Further investigation has revealed that the lettuce was purchased from the No Frills store, in the Golden Mile Plaza, 1880 Eglinton Avenue East.

The Toronto Police Service would like to make the public aware of a food tampering investigation.

It is reported that:

  • on Thursday, June 9, 2011, a package of "Andy Boy" Romaine lettuce hearts, two in a package, was purchased from a grocery store, either in the Midland Avenue/Lawrence Avenue West area or Lawrence Avenue East/Birchmount Road area
  • a two−inch sewing needle was found pierced into the spine of the lettuce,
  • the packaging was clear with pink lettering.

Police advise the public to use caution and check any pre−packaged lettuce for foreign objects.
