Yao Sun Loong Kong Chicken Ltd. Fined for an Offence under the Meat Inspection Act
December 24, 2012, Guelph: On October 30, 2012, a conviction was registered in the Old City Hall Court in Toronto, Ontario against Yao Sun Loong Kong Chicken Ltd., of British Columbia. This conviction resulted in a fine of $20,000.
Section 8 of the Meat Inspection Act provides that no person shall send or convey a meat product from one province to another, unless it was prepared and stored in a registered establishment that was operated in accordance with this Act and the regulations; and it complies with prescribed standards, packaging and labelling. Contraventions of section 8 constitute an offence under section 21(2) of the Meat Inspection Act. Between January 20, 2011 and January 24, 2011, Yao Sun Loong Kong Chicken Ltd. unlawfully sent 3360 chickens to Ontario from a provincial abattoir in British Columbia. This abattoir was not a federally registered establishment.
The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Meat Inspection Act. This is an Act respecting the import and export of and interprovincial trade in meat products, the registration of establishments, the inspection of animals and meat products in registered establishments and the standards for those establishments and for animals slaughtered and meat products prepared in those establishments.
