4077571 Canada Inc. (Kristom Canada) Fined $25,000 for Offences Under the Meat Inspection Act
Montreal, Quebec, August 12, 2011: On December 2, 2010, at the Longueuil Courthouse, 4077571 Canada Inc. (Kristom Canada), located in Montreal, pleaded guilty to five counts of violating the Meat Inspection Act.
The Court of Quebec ordered the company to pay a $25,000 fine.
Three of the offences, which occurred on May 31, July 27 and August 27, 2007, consisted of making a false or misleading statement in writing to an inspector, contrary to subsection 14(1) of the Meat Inspection Act.
The company had exported meat products to Hong Kong instead of Jamaica as declared on the export documents.
Two other offences, which occurred on June 29 and September 17, 2007, consisted of exporting a meat product that did not meet the requirements of the country to which it was being exported, contrary to paragraph 7(b) of the Meat Inspection Act.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Meat Inspection Act and its regulations. This act governs, among other things, the import, export and interprovincial trade of meat products.
