Andrew Maendel Enters Guilty Plea For Meat Inspection Violations

Winnipeg, MB, December 2, 2011: On October 24, 2011 in Manitoba Provincial Court, Mr. Andrew Maendel pled guilty to three counts of violating the Meat Inspection Act. The Honourable Judge Pullan accepted a jointly recommended sentence and fined Mr. Maendel $500 for each count, totaling $1,500.

Mr. Maendel’s violations, as follows, relate to the inter-provincial movement of meat which was not produced in a federally registered establishment.

Section 8(a): No person shall send or convey a meat product from one province to another unless: (a) it was prepared or stored in a registered establishment that was operated in accordance with this Act and the regulations;

Section 8(b): No person shall send or convey a meat product from one province to another unless: (b) it complies with prescribed standards and is packaged and labelled in the manner prescribed;

Section 10(2)(a): No person shall advertise or sell or have in his possession for any such purpose a meat product: (a) that has been sent or conveyed from one province to another unless the meat product complies with prescribed standards and is packaged and labelled in the manner prescribed.

The charges arose after Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspectors received information that an individual would be transporting chickens and turkeys from a Manitoba Hutterite Colony to Kenora, Ontario. CFIA inspectors intercepted Mr. Maendel as he was delivering turkey and chicken meat products to two Ontario residents. The CFIA determined the meat products in Mr. Maendel's possession were not prepared in a federally registered establishment and, as such, could not be conveyed or sold outside Manitoba.

The CFIA enforces federal legislation including the Meat Inspection Act and its Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
