Improper handling of animals results in $300 fine for Andrew McMillian

August 27 , 2010, Calgary, Alberta - On July 28, 2010, in Lethbridge Provincial Court, Andrew McMillan pleaded guilty to one count of violating section 62(1) of the Meat Inspection Regulations, thereby committing an offence under Section 21(3) of the Meat Inspection Act.

The guilty plea arose from an earlier incident where it was alleged that McMillan caused avoidable distress or pain to slaughter animals at a federally registered establishment in the City of Lethbridge.

The matter was heard in front of Judge Coward who ordered McMillan to pay a fine of $300. Mr. McMillan was given until October 14, 2010, to pay the fine.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Meat Inspection Act and the Meat Inspection Regulations. Under this legislation, handling food animals in a manner that subjects them to avoidable stress or avoidable pain is prohibited. Registered establishments must also comply with requirements for the unloading, holding and movement of animals in slaughterhouses.
