Clearbrook Grain and Milling Pleads Guilty to Improper Use of Medication in Animal Feeds
Abbotsford, BC, January 18, 2011: On Tuesday, December 15, 2010, Clearbrook Grain and Milling Co. Ltd. (CGM) pled guilty in Abbotsford Provincial Court to three counts of violating Section 14 of the Feeds Regulations which states that a mixed feed shall not contain
- (a) ingredients other than those listed in Schedule IV or V of the Act.
The Honourable Judge Rounthwaite imposed a fine of $15,000 against the company, payable within three months.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) laid charges following repeated inspections at CGM. In a meeting with the CFIA's investigator, a company representative confirmed that flushing the mixer between preparations of two different types of feed (one medicated, the other which was not to be medicated), as required by the regulations, was not a common practice at CGM. The company said it was expensive and caused delays affecting delivery of the product to the customer.
The CFIA enforces federal legislation, including the Feeds Act and its regulations. The CFIA protects consumers by contributing to food safety, and by protecting plants and the health of animals in Canada.
