Les Distributions J.M. Bernatchez Inc. Fined $3,000 for an Offence Under the Fish Inspection Act
Montreal, Quebec, June 10, 2011: On February 9, 2011, at the Percé Courthouse, the company Les Distributions J.M. Bernatchez Inc., located in Grande-Rivière, pleaded guilty to one count of violating the Fish Inspection Act and the Fish Inspection Regulations.
The Court of Quebec ordered the company to pay a $3,000 fine.
The offence, which occurred on July 31, 2008, involved shipping mussels to New Brunswick that had not been processed or stored in a registered establishment, in violation of subsection 14(1) of the Fish Inspection Regulations.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal statutes, including the Fish Inspection Act and the Fish Inspection Regulations. Under this statute, the CFIA verifies that importers of fish and seafood comply with Canadian import regulatory requirements.
