Nutreco Canada Inc., Operating Under the Name Shur-Gain, Fined $8,000 for Offences Under the Feeds Act and Feeds Regulations, 1983

Montreal, Quebec, August 11, 2011: On April 14, 2011, at the Amqui Courthouse, Nutreco Canada Inc., located in Montreal, pleaded guilty to two counts of violating the Feeds Act and Feeds Regulations, 1983.

The Court of Quebec ordered the company to pay a $8,000 fine.

The first offence consisted of selling, on January 26, 2009, feed (mineral blocks) that had not been registered in accordance with section 5 of the Feeds Regulations, 1983, in violation of paragraph 3(1)(a) of the Feeds Act.

In addition, the product had a label with incorrect or misleading information—the mineral blocks indicated that they were registered but the selenium levels were too high to allow such a registration—in violation of paragraph 28(b) of the Feeds Regulations, 1983.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) verifies livestock feeds manufactured and sold in Canada or imported are safe, effective and are labelled appropriately. Effective feeds contribute to the production and maintenance of healthy livestock.
