Ontario Corporation #1325438, Operating as Zadi Foods Ltd., Fined for Offences Under the Meat Inspection Act
GUELPH, June 9, 2011: On February 1, 2011, two convictions were registered against Ontario Corporation #1325438, Operating as Zadi Foods Ltd., also known as Casa Italia, in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
The company entered a guilty plea to one count under section 44(1)(b) of the Meat Inspection Regulations, where it was found to have re-admitted a meat product into its establishment that had been prepared elsewhere, and one count under section 7.(a) of the Meat Inspection Act, where the company was found to have then exported this meat product to the USA in violation of the Act and its regulations. The two convictions resulted in a total fine of $100,000.
The Meat Inspection Act and the Meat Inspection Regulations relate to the import and export and interprovincial trade in meat products, the registration of establishments, the inspection of animals and meat products in registered establishments and the standards for those establishments and for animals slaughtered and meat products prepared in those establishments. The CFIA verifies compliance with this Act and Regulations to ensure that meat and poultry products leaving federally-inspected establishments or being imported into or exported out of Canada are safe and wholesome.
