Rodney Checkowski Convicted of Violating the Health of Animals Act
Brandon, Manitoba, June 22, 2011: On March 2, 2011, in Manitoba Provincial Court, Rodney Checkowski was convicted of violating s.65 (1)(a) and s.66 (a) of the Health of Animals Act.
Mr. Checkowski was convicted of failing to provide reasonable assistance to Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) inspectors and failing to comply with a written notice. Both charges were a result of Mr. Checkowski's refusal to allow CFIA inspectors to enter his premises and conduct tuberculosis testing on his cattle herd which is in violation of the Health of Animals Act.
Judge Tarwid sentenced Mr. Checkowski to a fine of $2,500. In addition, Judge Tarwid granted a one-year extension for Mr. Checkowski to pay the $1,500 fine from a 2010 conviction under the Health of Animals Act. In total, Mr. Checkowski was fined $4,000 which is payable by March 2, 2012.
