Seafresh Products Distributors, Incorporated Enters Guilty Plea For Violating Fish Inspection Regulations

July 3, 2012, Richmond, BC: On April 24, 2012 in British Columbia Provincial Court, Seafresh Products Distributors Incorporated pleaded guilty to four counts of violating section 14.(3)(a) of the Fish Inspection Regulations.

Section 14.(3)(a) of the Fish Inspection Regulations states:

No person shall export fish unless

(a) all the processing and storage of the fish is carried out in a registered establishment,”

In her decision, the Honourable Judge Jane McKinnon imposed a total fine of $2,000.

Between May 22 and June 7, 2010, a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) investigation determined that Seafresh Products Distributors Incorporated unlawfully exported live prawns from Canada without the processing being carried out in a registered establishment.

The CFIA enforces federal legislation including the Fish Inspection Act and its Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants which enhances the health and well-being of Canada's people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
