Transport Eugène Nadeau Inc. Fined $35,000 for Offences under the Health of Animals Regulations

Montreal, Quebec, August 30, 2011: On January 24, 2011, at the St-Joseph-de-Beauce Courthouse, Transport Eugène Nadeau Inc., located in Sainte-Marguerite, pleaded guilty to seven counts of violating the Health of Animals Regulations.

The seven offences occured between May 9, 2007, and October 23, 2008, in Rivière du Loup, Saint-Cyrille-de-Wendover, Saint-Alexandre-de-Kamouraska, Vallée-Jonction and Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot.

On five occasions, the company transported on board a motor vehicle animals that could not be transported without undue suffering during the expected journey, contrary to paragraph 138(2)(a) of the Health of Animals Regulations. The pigs had significant hoof injuries, fractures, abscesses, arthritis or ulcerated hernias.

The company was also convicted of loading pigs on board a motor vehicle in a way likely to cause them injury or undue suffering, such as by lifting them by the tail, contrary to subsection 139(2) of the Health of Animals Regulations.

In addition, the company transported dairy cows in a motor vehicle with cutting edges that could cause them injury or undue suffering, contrary to paragraph 143(1)(b) of the Health of Animals Regulations.

The CFIA is responsible for enforcing a variety of federal legislation, including the Health of Animals Act and the Health of Animals Regulations. The CFIA safeguards food, animals and plants, which enhances the health and well-being of Canada’s people, environment and economy, and access to international markets.
