Emergency Disease Response for Aquatic Animals

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) identifies and responds to disease outbreaks or disease detections in aquatic animals in Canada through

  • an early detection system, and
  • a contingency plan to respond quickly and effectively to outbreaks or detections.

The CFIA must be notified of the introduction or presence of serious aquatic animal diseases. The requirements for notification are outlined in the Health of Animals Act and Regulations

Once a notification is received, we will evaluate the report and initiate appropriate disease response activities. Disease response may also involve other federal government departments or agencies, other levels of government, and industry. Emergency disease response activities are outlined in the Aquatic Animal Health Functional Plan.
