Infectious haematopoietic necrosis investigation in British Columbia

Testing has confirmed infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN) at an aquaculture facility in British Columbia, as first reported on May 17, 2012.

All affected fish have been humanely destroyed and disposed of.

The facility will remain under quarantine until all pens, cages and equipment have been cleaned and disinfected. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues to benefit from the full cooperation and support of the industry.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency works with industry to respond to suspect cases of aquatic diseases, such as IHN. The Agency’s aquatic animal disease response would normally include measures such as precautionary quarantines during an initial inspection.

It is important that strict biosecurity measures be followed to help mitigate the risk of spread of the disease.

Beginning in June, the Agency will be posting all confirmed cases of federally reportable aquatic animal diseases on its website on a monthly basis. This is part of the Agency’s efforts to be more open and transparent in the management of aquatic animal diseases.
