West Nile Virus, also known as West Nile Fever, West Nile Virus Disease or West Nile Encephalitis, affects wild and domestic birds and a variety of mammals including horses and humans. The Corvidae family of birds such as crows, blue and grey jays, ravens and magpies are particularly susceptible to illness and death from West Nile Virus.
In Canada, West Nile Virus is a immediately notifiable disease under the Health of Animals Regulations. Only laboratories are required to contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) regarding the suspicion or diagnosis of one of these diseases.
