On screen speaker: CFIA Communication Manager of the Emergency Operations Centre in Alberta, Randy Wiens.

An important part of our communications in this investigation has been the role of the industry associations and in particular the industry liaison, position that we've had admitted in the EOC. The regular calls with the industry associations are another important form of feedback that we get about what their members are saying. Because they would sometimes ask questions to Alberta beef or the Canadian Cattlemen's or the Saskatchewan cattlemen. They would ask them questions that they weren't asking us directly so they were a conduit to let us know about concerns or questions that were out there.

Speaker: Beef Production Specialist at Alberta Beef Producers and industry liaison at the Emergency Operations Centre, Karin Schmid.

I think it's been invaluable. It's provided me with a better depth of understanding and knowledge so that I can go back out to our producers and explain the rationale behind various decisions. Explain the science and the level of science that actually goes into making those decisions in the first place and really be in on the ground level and provide input back to CFIA as well it's been amazing.

On screen speaker: CFIA Incident Commander of the Emergency Operations Centre in Alberta, Rick James-Davies.

You know, I like to think it's a great example of open government. You know we're really working with the industry and the producers to solve a problem. Very much a team approach. The industry liaison is an invaluable asset for us. It acts as a sounding board where we can bounce some of our early thinking off. They help us with some of the delicate situations. They steer us in the right direction of who we need to talk to. On their part we've seen nothing but professionalism and discretion. They have access to some of our early thinking and we continue to be very comfortable to have them play that role.
