Based on Chapter VIII of Annex VIII of Regulation (EC) no 1774/2002 of the European Union Parliament and of the Council of 3 October 2002 laying down health rules concerning animal by-products not intended for human consumption.
I. Unprocessed Feathers and Parts of Feathers
Effective May 1, 2008, unprocessed feathers and parts of feathers cannot be exported to the European Union (EU). The EU prohibits these imports from all areas of the World.
II. Processed Feathers and Parts of Feathers
- Processed feathers may be exported with a commercial document stating that the feathers or parts of feathers have been treated with a steam current or by another method ensuring the inactivation of pathogens. They must be securely enclosed in packaging and dry.
- Each EU member country may have different requirements for the format of the commercial document. Exporters should have their importer confirm the proper formatting prior to export.
- The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) certification of these shipments is not required and not available.
III. Exemptions
The following feathers and parts of feathers are exempt from the prohibition and the requirement for a commercial document. The CFIA certification of these materials is not required and not available.
- Treated decorative feathers.
- Treated feathers carried by travellers for their private use.
- Shipments of treated feathers sent to private individuals for non-industrial purposes.
