Animal Biosecurity

Animal health starts on the farm with biosecurity - from the farm gate to international borders and beyond. Biosecurity refers to measures that prevent the introduction and spread of contagious diseases. For the best results, biosecurity measures should be in place wherever animals are present, including farms, auction markets, agricultural fairs, research laboratories and international borders.

Putting preventive measures in place to keep animals healthy has been a long-standing and successful practice on Canadian farms. These measures are collectively referred to as biosecurity. Biosecurity planning helps to ensure that practices routinely carried out on your farm are beneficial to animal health.

The CFIA develops national biosecurity standards, protocols and strategies for livestock, poultry and aquaculture production in collaboration with producer organizations, provincial/territorial governments, and academia.
