Assess Your Biosecurity Practices

Why plan?

Biosecurity has been a part of farming for a long time. Farmers employ different techniques to keep their animals and plants healthy, safe and protected from diseases and pests. A written biosecurity plan helps to ensure:

  • techniques are comprehensive and effective,
  • prevention efforts are organized and well-thought out,
  • employees know how to keep animals healthy, and
  • your farm is prepared to respond to suspected cases of contagious or reportable diseases.

Where to start?

Familiarize yourself with the basic principles of biosecurity. You may find that you are already following many of these basic principles on your farm.

  • Basic Principles of Biosecurity - A biosecurity plan should address how you manage animal, vehicle and human access to the farm, animal health and operations.
  • Assess the risks on your farm using the Biosecurity Checklist. (Download template)
