Chapter 7 - Contaminants in Feed

7.1 Mycotoxins in Livestock Feeds

Certain moulds are known to produce toxins in grain such that the suitability of the grain for use in livestock feed may be affected.

The recommendation from the CFIA regarding levels of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (also known as vomitoxin) is that swine diets should not contain greater than 1 mg deoxynivalenol per kg of diet. As well, it is advised that mycotoxin-contaminated grain not be fed to pregnant and lactating farm animals.

Feed manufacturers are reminded of their responsibilities under Section 3 (3) of the Feeds Act with respect to the production of feeds that are safe for livestock.

Further information is contained in a Mycotoxins factsheet, which is available on the CFIA web site.
