Information on Substances Approved by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for Staining Specified Risk Material (SRM)

Issue:

Industry has requested information on approved substances for staining SRM.

Background:

Staining of SRM is required under sections 6.21 (1), 6.22 (1), and 6.22 (2) of Part 1.1 of the Health of Animals Regulations and records of SRM removal, staining, and receipt, including the name of the stain, are required under section 6.23 (2).

The regulations set out criteria for these stains in that they must be conspicuous, indelible and, in some cases, safe for consumption by animals.

Annex N - Section 7.3, in the Meat Hygiene Manual of Procedures, deals with the segregation and staining of SRM. A complete list of approved "Meat Marking/printing inks for food contact" can be obtained on the CFIA website at: http://active.inspection.gc.ca/scripts/fssa/reference/
