Confidence in Canada's Beef - It begins on the Farm

Throughout the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis consumers have shown confidence in beef products because they trust Canada's safeguards.

To maintain the confidence of Canadians and our trading partners, we need to meet our BSE surveillance targets and look for the disease in the right places - by testing the 4-Ds: dead, down, diseased, and dying cattle.

Maintaining the confidence is a partnership

Producers are best placed to spot 4-D animals. It's up to producers to report cattle that die on the farm, those that are down, those that are diseased and those that are dying. These are the animals the CFIA needs to test. We can show Canadian and international consumers that the risk of BSE in Canada is minimal and that their confidence is justified.

Report your 4-D cattle (Dead-Down-Diseased-Dying)

To report an animal for testing call your private veterinarian or a CFIA district veterinarian. You can also call the CFIA at 1-866-400-4244 during business hours.

Financial support is available

The CFIA is providing financial support to offset the costs of veterinary examinations and carcass disposal (on-farm or deadstock collection). Please call the CFIA for more information.
