Wash your hands!

Always wash your hands before eating, before helping to prepare food, or setting the table. Washing your hands gets rid of bacteria that could make you sick. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice).

“RECIPE” FOR WASHING HANDS

Put these steps in the correct order.

Keep cold food cold

After shopping, quickly put away the groceries that need to be put in the fridge or freezer. Keeping food cold slows down the growth of harmful bacteria that could make you sick.

Help put the groceries away by drawing a line from each food to its proper storage place in the fridge, freezer or cupboard.

Zoonoses

Zoonoses (zoo-no-sees) are diseases that spread from animals to humans.

To help avoid zoonoses, always wash your hands after touching your pet or other animals.

Do you remember how to wash your hands?

Wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. How long is 20 seconds? It's the time it takes to sing the Happy Birthday song twice.

Making lunches

To keep food safe to eat, you need to be careful when you make lunch for school. Follow these steps.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice).
  2. Make your lunch on a clean countertop, using only clean utensils and equipment.
  3. Wash all fruits and vegetables before preparing or eating them.
  4. Keep cold food cold using insulated lunch bags and freezer packs.
  5. Keep hot food hot using insulated containers.

Draw a picture of yourself getting your lunch ready for school, showing how you follow these food safety steps.

Food Recalls and Allergy Alerts

Have you heard about food recalls and allergy alerts?

Sometimes the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has to get food out of the grocery stores because they may be harmful. This is called a food recall or an allergy alert.

You and your parents can find out about food recalls and allergy alerts by visiting the CFIA website at www.inspection.gc.ca.

You'll find lots of food safety information and your family can sign up to get food recalls and allergy alerts sent to you by email.
