UNDECLARED MILK PROTEIN IN RENÉ REY SUN, MOON, STARS DARK CHOCOLATE

OTTAWA, August 1, 2008 - The public warning issued on July 25, 2008 has been expanded to include additional information on product distribution.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and René Rey Swiss Chocolates Ltd. are warning people with allergies to milk not to consume the René Rey Sun, Moon, Stars Dark Chocolate described below. The affected products may contain milk protein which is not declared on the label.

The following products are affected by this alert:

René Rey Sun, Moon, Stars Dark Chocolate, 1.5 oz / 42 g bar, bearing UPC 0 57587 11127 8. There is no lot code on the individual bar. The bars can also be sold from a 24 chocolate display box bearing the UPC 0 57587 11151 3 and lot code 990787 or 220968. The lot code can be viewed on the inside of the upper lid of the display box.

René Rey Sun, Moon, Stars Dark Chocolate Mint, 1.5 oz / 42 g bar, bearing UPC 0 57587 11129 2. There is no lot code on the individual bar. The bars can also be sold from a 24 chocolate display box bearing the UPC 0 57587 11305 0 and lot code 440958 or 550927. The lot code can be viewed on the inside of the upper lid of the display box.

These products have been distributed in British Columbia, Alberta, Quebec and New Brunswick.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Consumption of these products may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction in persons with allergies to milk protein.

The manufacturer, René Rey Swiss Chocolates Ltd., North Vancouver, British Columbia, is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
