OTTAWA, September 8, 2010 - The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Leadbetters Foods Inc. are warning the public not to consume Leadbetters Cowboy Beef Burgers because the product may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The affected product, Leadbetters Cowboy Beef Burgers, is sold frozen in 2.27 Kg (5 lb) cartons containing 20 X 113.5 gr (4 oz) burgers bearing the UPC 8 73587 00003 5 and code 20169.

This product has been distributed in Ontario.

The CFIA is aware of an E. coli O157:H7 illness outbreak in Ontario and is collaborating with its partners, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), Health Canada, and various health units in Ontario to investigate these illnesses. This investigation is ongoing.

Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with these bacteria my cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Others may live with permanent kidney damage. In severe cases of illness, people may die.

The manufacturer, Leadbetters Foods Inc., Orillia, Ontario, is voluntarily recalling the affected product from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
