Question: Is the common name "protein powder" permitted? Is there a minimum amount of protein required?
Answer: Section B.01.305 of the Food and Drug Regulations provides
for representations regarding protein on foods that meet the conditions for the
claim "source of protein" or "excellent source of protein".
Therefore, the common name "protein powder" is acceptable if the
product is either a good or an excellent source of protein. For information
regarding the compositional requirements for protein claims, see Table 7-4 of the Guide to
Food Labelling and Advertising.
If there is no Reasonable Daily Intake specified for the product in Schedule K
of the Food and Drug Regulations, the reference amount for the food may be
used. (updated 2006)
