Restaurants and Retailers Warned of Inspection Scam

The Canadain Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning restaurant and retail operators to be aware of a scam involving individuals fraudulently posing as inspectors or public health officials.

Several restaurants and retailers across Canada have recently reported contact by individuals impersonating health or food inspectors. The individuals may ask for sensitive information or attempt to schedule an inspection, and often threaten the establishment with large fines.

As proof of their legitimacy, CFIA inspectors carry photographic identification specifying the Acts under which they are designated. If you are approached by an individual claiming to be an inspector, we encourage you to ask for proper identification before releasing any information or otherwise cooperating with the individual.

If you suspect you have been contacted by someone impersonating an inspector, please report the incident to your local police service or to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (1-888-495-8501).
