Field-testing in slaughter plants

To ensure compliance with federal acts, regulations and standards, front line inspectors and veterinarians carried out inspections in all federally registered meat slaughter and processing establishments and storage facilities.

Among these tests there were a total of 13,913 STOP (Swab Test On Premise) and an additional 22 CAST tests. These tests identify animals bearing substances, which inhibits the growth of an indicator organism, in their kidney tissues. Since such animals may contain violative residues of antibiotics, they are held at the plant until the tissues can be further examined by appropriate analytical protocols in a CFIA laboratory. If subsequently found in violation of the Canadian standards these animals are removed from the food distribution systems. By contrast if they are found compliant then the animal is released for sale and distribution.

The results of the laboratory confirmations of these samples are found in the following tables.
