Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Academic Advisory Panel


The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has convened an Academic Advisory Panel (the Panel) to provide expert advice. 

Membership

The Panel will be comprised of recognized experts drawn from academia, the private sector and non-governmental organizations.  The initial Panel members are:

  • Dr. Bonnie Buntain, on the faculty of the University of Calgary.
  • Dr. Carlton Gyles, Professor Emeritus, University of Guelph.
  • Dr. Rick Holley, on the faculty of the University of Manitoba.
  • Dr. Ron Usborne, retired. Former Chair of the Department of Food Science, University of Guelph
  • Ex-Officio Member: Dr. Brian Evans, Executive Vice President of the CFIA, Chief Veterinary Officer of Canada.

Discussion Topics

The Panel will be asked to review and advise on a variety of topics such as:

  • environmental scans of existing, emerging and re-emerging microbial and other food safety risks both within Canada and internationally;
  • food safety governance and accountabilities as well as areas for possible research collaboration in food safety and food science, including baseline data, trend analyses, modelling and foresight;
  • consumer and other food safety concerns including transparency, outreach, education, training and communication;
  • review of proposed changes to policies in terms of scientific rigour and the achievement of risk management objectives.
