Canada and the U.S. continue to work towards implementing the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (ISPM) 15, the standard that affects treating packaging material made of wood for wood packaging materials produced in Canada and the U.S.

This will affect all wood packaging, such as pallets and wood crating, that moves between both countries.

Once implemented, wood packaging material must be treated with an approved treatment as described in Annex 1 of ISPM 15: (2009) and marked as described in Annex 2 of ISPM 15: (2009) , before being used in international trade.

The date for full implementation has not been confirmed. Once the date has been confirmed by Canada and the U.S., industry will be informed and a phase-in period will begin.

Because wood packaging material accompanies a large percentage of shipments, the CFIA will continue to keep stakeholders informed of these developments.
