Description:

'Virginia' is a cut flower alstroemeria. The stems are medium in thickness and foliage on the stem is sparse to medium in density. The leaf blade is narrow-elliptic in shape and recurved along the longitudinal axis of the blade.

The inflorescence has a medium number of umbel branches which have absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The florets are medium in size with a medium spread of the tepals. Emargination on the outer tepals is medium in depth. The main colour on the inner side of the outer tepals is white and there are no stripes. The inner tepals are elliptic in shape. The middle zone on the inner side of the inner lateral tepals is light yellow in colour. There are a moderate number of medium sized stripes on the inner side of the inner lateral tepals. The stamen filaments have no spots and they are white. At the start of dehiscence, the anthers are greenish in colour. The pistil has absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the ovary and there are no spots on the stigma.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Virginia' originated from the controlled pollination of two unnamed varieties. The cross was made in Hillegom, The Netherlands in 1988. The selection and testing stage occurred from 1989 to 1995.

Tests & Trials: Trials for 'Virginia' were conducted in a plastic tunnel under local climate conditions in Langley, British Columbia in 2001. The trials consisted of twenty (20) plants per variety grown in 25 cm pots and supported by overhead wires. The plants were spaced at a density of four (4) plants per m2. Unless otherwise indicated, the measured characteristics were based on ten (10) measurements.
