Variety used for comparison: 'Balangbeke' (AngelMist Basket Purple)
Summary: 'Cartbas Depur' is an angelonia variety which has taller plants with longer racemes than 'Balangbeke'. The flowers of 'Cartbas Depur' are larger than those of 'Balangbeke'. The two varieties also differ in flower colour as 'Cartbas Depur' flowers are a darker violet colour than the reference variety flowers. 'Cartbas Depur' flowers have a dark violet coloured palate (nectary bulge) whereas 'Balangbeke' has a white palate.
'Cartbas Depur' is an angelonia variety with a semi-upright to spreading growth habit. There is very sparse pubescence on the flowering branches. The leaves of 'Cartbas Depur' are elliptic to lanceolate in shape, with an acute apex and acute base. The leaves are medium to dark green and moderately glossy, with weak pubescence on the upper and lower surfaces. The leaf margins are serrate. 'Cartbas Depur' has sessile leaves.
The inflorescences of 'Cartbas Depur' are compound racemes. There are two flowers per axil. The upper lip of the flower is weakly reflexed and the lateral and middle lobes of the lower lip are very weakly reflexed. The flowers of 'Cartbas Depur' have dark violet lips. The palate (nectary bulge) is dark violet in colour. The chamber of the throat of the flower is white and has a medium number of purple markings. The corolla tube is medium in length. The pedicel has strong anthocyanin and the angle between the pedicel and the peduncle is acute to right-angled.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Cartbas Depur' was developed by the breeder, Ralph T. Perkins, an employee of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc., in Gilroy, California, as part of a planned pedigree breeding progam. The new variety originated from a cross made in November 2001, with the female parent 'Carita Deep Pink', and the male parent 60-1, a proprietary line with purple and white flowers. The resultant F1 seed was sown in a greenhouse in April 2002. In July 2002 a single plant from the F1 progeny was selected based on flower colour, form and plant habit.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Cartbas Depur' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer 2005, in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants of each variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 15 cm pots on June 10, 2005. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on July 5, 2005. All colour measurements were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
