The germinated seedling was grown in a green house, chip budded onto 'M9' rootstock and planted in Douglas County, Washington in 2001. Second generation trees were planted at two locations in Douglas County and one location in Franklin County, Washington. 'WA 38' was selected in 2004 on the basis of fruit texture and flavour, storageability and time to fruit browning when cut.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'WA 38' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, reference number DEE 4072761, purchased from Groupe d'Étude et de contrôle des Variétés Et des Semences (GEVES), France. The trial was conducted by the Institut national de recherche pour l'agriculture, l'alimentation et l'environnement in Beaucouzé, France from 2017 to 2020.
