Summary: The plants of 'BB05-251MI-14' have strong vigour whereas the plants of 'Liberty' have medium vigour. The plant growth habit of 'BB05-251MI-14' is semi-upright whereas the plant growth habit is upright for 'Nelson'. 'BB05-251MI-14' has a larger leaf than 'Liberty'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'BB05-251MI-14' is medium to dark green whereas the leaf blade of 'Liberty' is light to medium green. The leaf blade of 'BB05-251MI-14' has an entire margin whereas the leaf blade of 'Liberty' has a serrate margin. The shape of the corolla of 'BB05-251MI-14' is urceolate whereas the corolla of 'Nelson' and 'Liberty' is cylindrical. The corolla tube of 'BB05-251MI-14' has weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration and a medium presence of ridges whereas the corolla tube of both reference varieties has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration and very strong presence of ridges. The intensity of green colour of the unripe fruit of 'BB05-251MI-14' is weak whereas the green colour of the unripe fruit of 'Nelson' is medium to strong. The firmness of the fruit of 'BB05-251MI-14' is firm to very firm whereas the firmness of the fruit of 'Nelson' is soft to medium and the firmness of the fruit of 'Liberty' is medium to firm. FLOWERING: begins mid-season on one-year-old shoots
FLOWER BUD: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
COROLLA: urceolate shape
COROLLA TUBE: medium size, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, medium presence of ridges
FRUIT CLUSTER: sparse to medium density
UNRIPE FRUIT: weak intensity of green colour, ripening begins mid-season to late on one-year-old shoots
FRUIT: medium size, round shape in longitudinal section, medium to deep calyx basin, firm to very firm, high sweetness, medium acidity
FRUIT SKIN: medium to strong degree of bloom, dark blue (after removal of bloom)
FRUIT SEPAL: erect to semi-erect attitude, curvature is incurved
Origin & Breeding History: 'BB05-251MI-14' originated from a cross conducted in 2005, in South Haven, Michigan, USA, between the variety 'Liberty', as the female parent, and the variety 'Nelson', as the male parent. Seed from this cross was sown, germinated, and the resulting plants were grown for 18 months before being planted in a seedling evaluation plot near Muskegon, Michigan, in 2007. After 3 years of evaluation, 'BB05-251MI-14' was selected in 2010 for its maturity date, bushy growth habit, and berry quality, flavour, and storage ability.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BB05-251MI-14' was conducted in 2017, in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. There were 120 plants per variety which were spaced 1 m apart.
