Description:

'PPS01-140 A-line' is a male sterile inbred spring canola variety containing the bar and barnase genes. The cotyledons are narrow and short to medium in length. Leaf blades are medium green in colour with few to medium number of lobes. The leaf margin is rounded with a low density of dentations that are very shallow to shallow in depth. The leaves are medium in length and width, with a short to medium petiole. The yellow flower petals are short with a medium width. The semi-erect to horizontal siliques are short to medium in length and medium in width with a short to medium length beak and pedicel. The plants are medium to tall in height. Seed colour is black. 'PPS01-140 A-line' has low erucic acid content and low glucosinolates. 'PPS01-140 A-line' is resistant to glufosinate ammonium herbicides.

Origin & Breeding History: 'PPS01-140 A-line' is a male sterile line which contains the Ms8 gene construct in heterozygous state. 'PPS01-140 A-line' was derived by backcrossing a doubled haploid line 98-50-104 to the male sterile line used as the source of the Ms8 gene. Doubled haploid line 98-50-104 was extracted from F1 generation derived from cross 97CGH400 / 97CGH403. 'PPS01-140 A-line' was selected in 2000 on the basis of male sterility stability, expression of tolerance to glufosinate ammonium herbicide and good combining ability with numerous restorer lines. Other selection parameters included height, vigour, maturity, black leg resistance, oil content, fatty acid profile, and glucosinolates content. Breeder seed production commenced in the 2002 season.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted at the Bayer CropScience facility in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in 2002, 2003. Plots consisted of 3 rows 6 meters in length with 50 cm row spacing. There were 2 replicates laid out in a RCB design.
