Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'PIIDIST-II' (Blue Cascades)

Summary: The plants of 'PIIDIST-V' have a bushy rounded to spreading growth habit while the plants of 'PIIDIST-II' have an upright to spreading growth habit. The plants of 'PIIDIST-V' have a medium number of main branches while the plants of 'PIIDIST-II' have few main branches. The leaves of 'PIIDIST-V' are smaller than those of 'PIIDIST-II'. The leaf blade of 'PIIDIST-V' is oblanceolate in shape while the leaf blade of 'PIIDIST-II' is elliptic to oblanceolate in shape. The upper side of the newly opened leaf blade of 'PIIDIST-V' is brown green with a brown red margin while the upper side of the newly opened leaf blade of 'PIIDIST-II' is brown green with less red.

STEM: rounded, smooth, absent to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, grey-brown, thin to medium thickness, no twisting
LENTICELS: round, elevated, light yellow brown (RHS 165D)

BUD SCALES: light yellow brown (RHS 160D) to green brown (RHS 153D)
LEAF (EMERGING): medium brown (RHS 176B) rimmed with brown red (RHS180A) on upper side
NEWLY OPENED LEAF: brown green (RHS 146C) with brown red (RHS181C) margins on upper side
MATURE LEAF: alternate arrangement along stem, simple type, entire margin, absent to very weak undulation of margin, oblanceolate, acute apex with mucronate tip, cuneate base, leathery texture, absent or very weak fragrance, petiole present
LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): dark green (RHS 147A), weak to medium glossiness
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): medium green (greyer than 146B)

Origin & Breeding History: 'PIIDIST-V' resulted from an open pollinated cross between an unnamed seedling derived from seed collected from 'PIIDIST-II', as the female parent, and an unknown male parent. The cross occurred in Watkinsville, Georgia, USA in 2011. 'PIIDIST-V' was selected in Watkinsville, Georgia in July 2012 based on growth habit, leaf shape and leaf colour on new and mature growth.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'PIIDIST-V' was conducted as an outdoor container trial during the summer of 2017 at Bioflora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety, with each plant grown in a 9 litre container spaced approximately 1 metre apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety, on September 5, 2017. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
