Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AC Watson', 'AC McDuff', 'CDC Bethune' and 'Norlin'

Summary: 'Lightning' is an oilseed flax variety that has weak sepal dotting, whereas there is no sepal dotting in any of the four reference varieties. The filament of 'Lightning' is white at the top, while it is blue at the top in 'AC McDuff' and 'CDC Bethune'. The style of 'Lightning' is white at the base and blue at the base of 'AC McDuff', 'AC Watson' and 'CDC Bethune'. The stigma colour is white in 'Lightning' and light violet in 'AC McDuff'. The seeds of 'Lightning' are larger than those of 'AC McDuff', 'CDC Bethune' and 'Norlin'. 'Lightning' has higher oil content than 'AC Watson' and 'CDC Bethune'.

Description:

'Lightning' is an oilseed flax variety. The hypocotyls of the seedlings have very weak or no anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are medium sized and flattened disk shape, with no longitudinal folding of the petals. Sepal dotting is absent to weak. The flowers of 'Lightning' are medium blue and the filament is white at the top and at the base. The anther is blue, with clear pollen. The style is white to blue at the base and white at the top, with a white stigma.

'Lightning' matures mid-season and produces a medium sized capsule which is semi-dehiscent. Ciliation of the false septa is absent. The seeds are medium brown and large in size.

'Lightning' is resistant to flax wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lini). The variety is immune to North American flax rust races.

'Lightning' has fair resistance to shattering, capsule loss and lodging. It has a moderate capability to produce basal branching.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Lightning', which was tested under the experimental number FP1069, was developed at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, from the cross 'AC McDuff' / 'AC Watson', made in 1992. In the development of FP1069, the F2 and subsequent generations were advanced using the pedigree method with selection pressure for oil content, oil quality, lodging resistance and rust resistance. Single plant selection was made in the F3 and F5 generations. An F7 line, designated M4165, was selected and evaluated in preliminary yield trials in 1995 and for Fusarium wilt in the Fusarium wilt nurseries in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The line was evaluated as FP1069 in the 1996 Flax Joint Project test at 10 locations in Manitoba and Saskatchewan and in the Flax Cooperative test from 1997 to 1999.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Lightning' were conducted at the Morden Research Station, Morden, Manitoba, during 2000 and 2001. The trials consisted of 2 replicates of 4-row plots. The plots were 5.5 metres long and the rows were spaced at 30 cm. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 50 measurements per year.
