Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'CDC Bethune' and 'CDC Sorrel'

Summary: The petal of 'CDC Buryu' is broader than that of 'CDC Sorrel'. The distal end of the filament is white for 'CDC Buryu' whereas it is blue for 'CDC Bethune'. The style of 'CDC Buryu' is white to pale blue at the distal end and pale blue to blue at the basal end whereas the style of 'CDC Bethune' is blue at the distal end and dark blue at the basal end. There is no ciliation of the false septa in the bolls of 'CDC Buryu' whereas it is present in 'CDC Sorrel'. The seeds of 'CDC Buryu' are shorter and narrower than the seeds of 'CDC Sorrel'. The 1000 seed weight of 'CDC Buryu' is lower than that of both reference varieties.

PLANT: oilseed type
HYPOCOTYL: very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

FLOWER: very weak sepal dotting at bud stage, crown is blue-violet just before opening, flattened disk shape, medium size corolla, blue when fully developed, no longitudinal folding of petals, overlapping arrangement of petals

FILAMENT: white at distal and basal end
STYLE: white to pale blue at distal end, pale blue to blue at basal end
STIGMA: pale violet

BOLL: medium size, ciliation of false septa absent, semi-dehiscent, matures mid-season
SEED: medium brown, medium size

DISEASE REACTION: moderately susceptible to Pasmo (Septa linicola (imperfect); Mycophaerella linorum (perfect))

AGRONOMY: low to medium capacity to produce basal branching; good resistance to shattering, lodging and capsule loss

Origin & Breeding History: 'CDC Buryu' (experimental designations FP2316, F07144) was developed at the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, using a pedigree breeding method. It is the result of a cross between the variety 'CDC Bethune' and FP2142 conducted in 2001, in the Phytotron at the University of Saskatchewan. The F2 population was grown at the Kernen Crop Research Farm in 2002 and advanced using the pedigree system from F3 through to F5. The selection criteria used at each generation was primarily stand vigour, maturity, oil content and iodine value. From 2007 to 2009, the line was evaluated as F07144, in replicated field trials in Saskatchewan. It was entered and tested in the Flax Cooperative Trial in 2010-2011 and 2014 as FP2316.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials were conducted during the 2015 and 2016 growing seasons in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The trials consisted of 3 replications, of each variety, organized in a randomized complete block design. There were 6 rows per replicate with a row length of 3.66 metres with 19 cm between rows. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety each year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
