Summary: 'Barseven' is a goldenrod variety that differs from 'Kibadol' in plant height and width. 'Barseven' produces plants that are significantly shorter and narrower than the reference variety.

Description:

'Barseven' is a goldenrod variety which produces short, compact plants with a narrow upright growth habit. The stems are medium green with sparse pubescence. The basal leaves are present at flowering and are linear in shape. The stem leaves are sessile and linear in shape, with an acuminate apex. The stem leaf margins are serrate and there is no pubescence on the upper or lower side and no rugosity. The colour of the upper side of the stem leaf is dark green and the lower side is medium green. 'Barseven' produces a dense panicle type, terminal inflorescence. The panicle is pyramidal in shape. The upper side of the floret is light yellow.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Barseven' originated as a seedling selection from a cross between two breeding lines made in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands in 1992. The seedling was selected for its dwarf growth habit.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Barseven' were conducted in the summer of 2000 at Genesis Plant Propagation Ltd., Langley, British Columbia. The trials consisted of 12 plants per variety, grown in 25 cm pots. They were planted April 15, 2000 and pinched May 15, 2000. The plants were grown in a cold frame until June 15, 2000 and then were placed outdoors. No spray application was applied.
