Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Fantasia'

Summary: The plants of 'Berry Awesome' are shorter than those of 'Fantasia'. The branches of 'Berry Awesome' have medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the branches of 'Fantasia' have weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Berry Awesome' is longer than that of 'Fantasia'. The leaf blade of 'Berry Awesome' is red whereas that of 'Fantasia' is medium green. The leaf blade of 'Berry Awesome' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the leaf blade of 'Fantasia' has absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The petiole of 'Berry Awesome' has strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while the petiole of 'Fantasia' has absent to very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The eye on the flower of 'Berry Awesome' is dark purple red whereas the eye on 'Fantasia' is purple red.

Description:

PLANT: upright to bushy growth habit, medium branching density
BRANCH: semi-upright attitude, red on upper third, medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF BLADE: upper side red, strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, palmate, truncate to cordate base, acute apex, strong degree of lobing, moderate undulation of margin, medium depth dentate margin incisions
PETIOLE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration

FLOWER: single, purple main colour, medium sized eye zone, dark purple red (RHS 53A) eye zone, strong overlapping of petals, mid to late season flowering
PETAL: Type 3 shape, one colour, upper side blue pink to purple (RHS 72C-70B), lower side blue pink (RHS 70C), absent or very weak serrations on margin, weak to medium undulation of margin, no fading of colour
STAMINAL COLUMN: pink main colour, colour at base identical to main colour
STIGMA PAD: medium red

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'Berry Awesome' originated from a cross conducted during the summer of 2011 in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. The cross was conducted between the female parent variety 'Crown Jewels' and the male parent variety 'Cranberry Crush'. The selection of 'Berry Awesome' was initially made in the spring of 2012 based on flower colour, growth habit, weather tolerance, leaf colour and leaf shape. Vegetative propagation of 'Berry Awesome' by stem cuttings was first conducted in 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Berry Awesome' was grown outdoors at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario, during the summer of 2016. The trial consisted of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. The plants were grown in 23 cm diameter round pots spaced approximately 75 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
