Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Balcebimpu' (Celebrette Purple Improved) and 'Balcebimho' (Celebrette Hot Rose Improved)

Summary: 'KIE00013' has a taller plant height than 'Balcebimpu' and a narrower plant width than 'Balcebimho'. 'KIE00013' has stronger anthocyanin in the shoot than 'Balcebimpu'. 'KIE00013' has stronger anthocyanin on the midrib and veins on the lower side of the leaf blade and stronger anthocyanin on the upper side of the petiole than 'Balcebimpu'. 'KIE00013' has slightly different flower colour than 'Balcebimpu' and has a smaller eye zone than 'Balcebimho'. 'KIE00013' has a red eye zone while 'Balcebimho' has a white and pink eye zone. 'KIE00013' has a longer pedicel with stronger anthocyanin than 'Balcebimpu'.

Description:

'KIE00013' is a New Guinea Impatiens variety with strong anthocyanin colouration on the upper third of the shoot. The leaf has a large length to width ratio and is not variegated. The main colour of the upper side of the leaf blade is medium green. There is weak anthocyanin on the midrib on the upper side of the leaf. The lower side of the leaf is green in colour between the veins. The lower side of the leaf blade has strong anthocyanin on the midrib and veins. The petiole is medium to long in length and has strong anthocyanin on the upper side.

'KIE00013' has single purple red flowers with a small red eye zone. The incision on the lower petal is shallow to medium in depth and the lower petal is medium in length. The upper petal is medium in width. The pedicel and spur have strong anthocyanin and the spur has a medium to strong curvature.

Origin & Breeding History: 'KIE00013' was the result of a controlled cross, made in Gensingen, Germany. The variety was selected in 1999 for its large purple red flowers and vigorous habit.

Tests & Trials: 'KIE00013' was tested in a greenhouse during the spring and summer of 2004, in St. Thomas, Ontario. Trials included 15 plants of the candidate and reference varieties. Rooted cuttings were planted into 6cm cells in week 19 and transplanted into 15cm pots in week 25. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety on August 9, 2004. Colour determinations were made using the 2001 RHS Colour Chart.
