Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Carneum'

Summary: 'Pink Sensation' produces a taller narrower plant than 'Carneum'. The leaf blade of 'Pink Sensation' is slightly smaller than 'Carneum'. 'Pink Sensation' has a shorter petiole than 'Carneum'. The inflorescence of 'Pink Sensation' is longer than 'Carneum'. 'Pink Sensation' has a shorter floret and shorter pedicel than 'Carneum'. The flower colour for 'Pink Sensation' is pink while for 'Carneum' it is white.

Description:

'Pink Sensation' is a vegetatively propagated perennial aconitum variety with an upright to bushy growth habit. The degree of branching is sparse. The stem has a medium green colour with very weak to weak anthocyanin. The stem is smooth with a medium thickness, weak waxy bloom and sparse pubescence. The simple type leaves are reniform in shape. They are arranged in a rosette fashion at the base of the plant and alternately along the flowering stem. The leaf blade is a medium to dark green colour on the upper side and light green on the lower side, with an acute shaped apex and sagittate shaped base. The leaf blade has a incised margin, with very weak to weak pubescence on the upper and lower sides. The is no variegation present on the leaf. The leaf petiole has no anthocyanin present.

'Pink Sensation' flowers once in mid season for a short to medium length of time. The inflorescence is a raceme type which bears the erect florets in a terminal position. The colour of the florets is a light blue-pink.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Pink Sensation' was selected from a seed bed of Aconitum cammarum in De Hummelo, the Netherlands by Piet Oudolf in 1995. It was selected based on improved floral traits, as well as form and habit.

Tests & Trials: The trials were conducted in the summer of 2003, at Oxford Station, Ontario. There were ten plants of each grown in a field with plants spaced 0.4 metres apart within the row, and 1 metre between rows.
