Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Triple Crown'

Summary: 'SW Betania' has a weaker glaucosity of the leaf and lemma than 'Triple Crown'. 'SW Betania' heads earlier than 'Triple Crown' and is shorter in height at heading than 'Triple Crown'.

Description:

'SW Betania' is a hulled spring oat variety. Juvenile growth habit is erect with absent to very sparse pubescence of the lower leaf sheath. The lower leaf blades have absent to very sparse pubescence. The leaves at booting stage have weak glaucosity and there is absent to sparse pubescence of the leaf margins. The frequency of plants with recurved or drooping flag leaves is medium. The stem segment immediately above and below the upper culm node has absent to very sparse pubescence. The culm is medium in thickness and white in colour at maturity.

The semi-erect panicle of 'SW Betania' is symmetrical in shape and intermediate in length. The medium length lemma is white in colour at maturity and has a moderate tendancy to be awned. The lateral and dorsal surfaces of the lemma are glabrous with weak glaucosity at the green stage. The kernels are white in colour and mid long and mid wide with very weak hairiness of the base. The basal hairs are short. The rachilla is medium in length. The caryopsis is moderately pubescent.

'SW Betania' is moderately resistant to Crown rust (Puccinia coronata) races CR13, CR181, CR185, CR192, CR223 and CR225, Black loose smut (Ustilago avenae) races A13, A60 and A617, Stem rust (Puccinia graminis f.sp. avenae) races NA8, NA16, NA25, NA27, NA28, NA55 and NA67, Covered smut (Ustilago kolleri) and Red leaf Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV). 'SW Betania' has good lodging and shattering resistance, and good drought tolerance.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SW Betania' originates from the cross SW 151-7-95 x SW 52-95 made in 1994 in Svalov, Sweden using a modified pedigree breeding method. A single plant selection was made in the F4. Early generation selection was based on disease resistance, and grain quality and later for yield, straw stiffness and other agronomic characteristics. Breeder seed was derived from one panicle selected in F7 in 1999.

Tests & Trials: The tests and trials consisted of eight row plots which were 5 m in length, spaced 15 cm apart and replicated twice in a RCBD. The trials were conducted in Moon Lake, Saskatchewan in 2003 and 2004.
