Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Majoret' and 'Carneval'

Summary: SW Circus' is a field pea with smaller stipules than those of 'Carneval' and shorter pods than 'Majoret'. Shape of the distal part of the pods is blunt for 'SW Circus' while it is pointed for 'Majoret'. Degree of curvature of the pods is absent to very weak for 'SW Circus' while for 'Majoret', it is moderate. 'SW Circus' has yellow seed cotyledons while those of 'Majoret' are green in colour. The seeds of 'SW Circus' are heavier than those of 'Carneval' and lighter than those of 'Majoret'. 'SW Circus' is susceptible to powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni) while 'Carneval' is moderately susceptible.

Description:

'SW Circus' is a semi-leafless field pea variety whose plants are green in colour at flowering with vines which are medium in length. Stipule development is normal with flecking present.

SW Circus' flowers early to mid-season and bears one to two flowers per node. 'SW Circus' produces green pods with an absent to very weak, concave curvature. The distal part of the pod is blunt in shape and there are an average of seven ovules per pod. The immature seeds of 'SW Circus' are light green in colour. The dry seeds are medium in size with yellow cotyledons and no black colour of the hilum. The starch grain is simple. 'SW Circus' is susceptible to powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni).

Origin & Breeding History: 'SW Circus' (experimental designation SW 975504) originated from a cross made in 1994 at Svalöf Weibull AB, Svalöv, Sweden. The breeding method was a pedigree method where the variety was selected as a single plant in the F4 generation. It was selected on the basis of yield, semi-leafless trait, straw stiffness, yellow seed colour and early maturity. Breeder seed was bulked in the F5 generation. The variety is maintained by Svalöf Weibull Ltd. in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and by Svalöf Weibull AB in Svalöv, Sweden.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted during the summers of 2001 and 2002 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. There were two replicates, each measuring 1.75 meters x 3.25 meters, where plant spacing was 40 plants per meter squared.
